Did you know? Laurence Olivier wasn’t the only thespian in his family. Though she never became famous like her younger brother, Sybille Olivier found modest success on the stage during the 1920s, even performing at the Royal Court in Sloane Square. I recently purchased this vintage postcard featuring Sybille from ca. 1926 and have a couple playbills for shows in which she appeared. Swipe to see programmes from “Don Juan”, a one-night engagement at the Court put on by Mrs Geoffrey Whitworth’s The Three Hundred Club (1926), and “The Dancers”, put on by Frank Curzon and Gerald DuMaurier’s company at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle-on-Tyne (1924). 🌟 // Definitely a strong family resemblance.

Legends corresponding with legends. 🙌🏻 Wonderful letter from Laurence Olivier to Basil Rathbone, dated February 10, 1949. Discusses the film version of HAMLET, ideas for future films, and the Oliviers’ 1949 London West End season. What I find most interesting is the mention of he and Vivien not having had a proper long break from work in 11 years. It’s what they signed up for and what they loved, but it’s no wonder exhaustion and mental breakdowns followed. I’m tired just reading that!

Vernier, showing Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh in costume for Shakespeare’s TITUS ANDRONICUS. The Oliviers led a European tour of the play in 1957. I was chatting with some of the admins of other Vivien Leigh accounts earlier today about how we organise and store our collections. I snapped a few photos so thought I’d share some info publicly as well. I often post items from the #kendrabeancollection, which is my personal collection. I only collect paper ephemera - photographs, magazines, playbills, etc., so it’s all stored flat in boxes. I purchase archival supplies from Preservation Equipment Ltd, a U.K. based company that specialises in museum-grade storage and conservation supplies. (If you’re in the US, I’d recommend Gaylord Archival). My collection is split across my home in England and my parents’ home in the US. I’d be curious to know how you store your old Hollywood collections!
